The Ultimate Baby Registry Guide: What You Really Need

Let’s talk about a Baby Registry. Or as I like to call them: The Great Overwhelm.

Between the “must-have” wipe warmers, vibrating bassinets, and bathtubs shaped like whales, it’s easy to feel like you need a second mortgage just to survive the first three months. Spoiler alert: you don’t.

Truth is, babies outgrow most of their gear before you finish your coffee. (Which you won’t, by the way. Cold coffee is a rite of passage.) So instead of going full chaos-mode, here’s what I actually used—and loved—during those blurry newborn months.

This is your minimalist, no-fuss, real-life baby registry. No fluff, no gimmicks. Just the gear that works.

Put this on your Baby Registry

Big Gear You’ll Use Daily (and Not Regret Buying)

1. Co-Sleeper

Absolute game-changer for those middle-of-the-night feeds. It keeps baby safely close, without having to stumble across the room like a zombie at 3AM. Not only is this the safer option for you and your little angel – but it it will also help in keeping you sane at night when you are trying to check if your little one is breathing. We used the Snuzpod 4 – and I can definitely recommend it, it is a bit on the pricier side but you will have the piece of mind that your little one is safe warm and close by.

2. Crib

Yes, you’ll need one once they outgrow the co-sleeper (which happens faster than you think). Pick a crib that’s sturdy, simple, and grows with them. It does not have to be the most expensive one, just make sure the matrass is of good quality and that you can find bed sheets for it. Below is a few good options from amazon that does not break the bank.

3. UPPAbaby Vista Stroller (yes I am a little bias here)

But real talk: you don’t need the UPPAbaby to survive. Any good stroller that’s safe, comfy, and can handle a sudden diaper blowout exit strategy will do the trick. Strollers are super personal — different brands have different perks. Just find one that fits your lifestyle and keeps your baby dry, secure, and snoozing like royalty.

4. Safe and Reliable Car Seat

Car seats aren’t just another baby “must-have”—they’re the must-have. If you plan to leave the hospital (ever), you’ll need one.

Here’s what to look for when picking your perfect seat:

  • Rear-facing only — For infants, this is non-negotiable. It’s the safest position for those tiny neck muscles.
  • Fits newborns — Make sure it’s suitable from birth (check those weight/height guidelines).
  • ISOFIX compatible — It’s not required, but it makes installation waaaay easier and more secure (goodbye, seatbelt spaghetti).
  • Soft, washable covers — Because poop happens.
  • Side impact protection — Added safety for peace of mind.
  • Lightweight or stroller-compatible — Bonus points if it clips into your stroller and saves your arms.

Bottom line: Your car seat should keep baby safe, snug, and secure, without turning every outing into a wrestling match.

5. Changing Table + Mat

Sure, you could change baby on the couch—but trust me, your back will thank you for a real setup. When shopping for the changing table, make sure you get one with drawers so it can double down as storage for baby clothes or other nick knacks.

Diapering Must-Haves (the basics of your Baby Registry)

  • Diapers – Start with a small pack of newborn, then stock up on size 1. But if you have to ask people for diapers for a baby shower then ask for size 4 (you will use those the longest in your first year).
  • Wipes – Unscented, gentle, and multipurpose. Buy in bulk—you’ll use them on everything.
  • Vaseline – Great for preventing diaper rash, especially in those first poopy weeks. Seriously – skip the diaper creams and just use gold old school vaseline (it will save you time and money). *If your baby has severe diaper rash – make sure to always consult your doctor for the best solutions.
  • Cotton Pads & Cotton Buds – For baby eyes, ears, and those delicate little folds.

Clothing & Cozy Essentials for every Baby Registry

  • Onesies (5–7) – Basic white onesies—long and short sleeve. Pro tip: go for the side-snap ones. Way easier than playing “tug-of-war: head edition.”
  • Baby Beanies & Socks – Because babies are somehow always cold, and newborns can not regulate their body temperatures.
  • Muslin Cloths (2–3) – For burps, spills, sun covers, peekaboo… you name it. (and also swaddling if you get the right size)
  • Soft Baby Blanket – For naps, cuddles, and looking cute on Instagram.

Bath & Health Basics (Keep It Simple)

  • Baby Bath Tub – Keeps bath time from turning into a slippery wrestling match.
  • Baby Lotion – For post-bath softness and flaky newborn skin.
  • Digital Thermometer – Must-have for those “are they warm or is it just me?” moments.
  • NoseFrida – It’s gross. It works. That’s all you need to know. But seriously – this is the best thing since sliced bread, skip all the other stuff and just get this. It is cost effective and easy to use.

Feeding & Mom Support (additional stuff to add to your Baby Registry)

  • Breast Pump – Freedom in pump form. Great for building a stash or taking a break.
  • Nursing Pillow – Save your arms and your neck—totally worth it.
  • Night Light – Enough glow to change a diaper or feed at 2AM, without fully waking the baby (or you).

Helpful Extras That Pulled Their Weight

  • Playmat – A soft, safe space for tummy time and actual time to drink your coffee.

Final Thoughts from a Mom Who’s Been There (and Bought the Wipe Warmer)

Look, the baby industry will try to sell you everything. But in real life? You need a few good basics, some common sense, and about 10 muslin cloths (ok, I said 3 earlier, but let’s be real). Remember to keep your Baby Registry simple and minimal – and to only add the things you are going to really use.

Keep it simple. Save your money (and your sanity). And know that you’re already doing a great job—no Bluetooth bottle warmer required.
